Fasting: A Pathway to Freedom and Renewal in Christ

Fasting is one of the most powerful spiritual disciplines God has given His people. Yet for many, it remains misunderstood or overlooked. At Glohrey Addiction Recovery, we believe fasting, combined with prayer is a key to breaking strongholds, restoring intimacy with God, and experiencing lasting freedom.
Why Fasting?
Throughout Scripture, we see fasting used in times of deep need, repentance, and pursuit of God’s presence. Jesus Himself said, “When you fast…” (Matthew 6:16), not if. Fasting was never meant to be optional—it’s an essential part of walking closely with the Lord.
Fasting humbles us, weakens the grip of the flesh, and sharpens our spiritual focus. It helps us say “no” to temporary cravings so we can say “yes” to God’s eternal purposes. As Isaiah 58:6 declares:
“Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke?”
Fasting and Addiction
Addiction is one of the greatest strongholds of our time. It doesn’t just affect the body—it clouds the mind, damages relationships, and wounds the spirit. Many programs offer coping strategies, but few address the deeper spiritual roots.
Fasting creates space for God to deal with those roots. When we fast, we deny the very appetites that often fuel destructive cycles. Combined with prayer, fasting opens the door for God’s Spirit to bring healing, clarity, and strength where human effort falls short.
What Happens When We Fast
- The Flesh Weakens – We learn to say no to cravings, habits, and distractions that once controlled us.
- The Spirit Strengthens – Prayer and Scripture take on new power as we draw near to God.
- Breakthroughs Come – Strongholds that felt unshakable begin to fall.
- Renewal Follows – Our minds clear, our spirits refresh, and our bodies experience rest from constant indulgence.
Fasting in Community
At Glohrey Addiction Recovery, we don’t fast alone. Each week, we gather to encourage one another, share testimonies, and lift our prayers together. Walking this journey in community brings strength, accountability, and joy.
Our pathway is simple:
- Month 1: Begin with a one-day fast
- Month 2: Grow into a two-day fast
- Month 3: Step into a three-day fast (with biblical and practical preparation)
No one is pressured, and everyone walks at their own pace. It’s not about perfection—it’s about surrender.
A Message of Hope
You may feel like addiction or brokenness has the final word in your life. But God promises otherwise. Jesus said:
“This kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.” (Matthew 17:21)
Fasting isn’t about earning God’s favor—it’s about positioning ourselves to receive His power. And when His power shows up, chains break, peace returns, and lives are restored.
